One of the first lessons in learned growing up was not to judge a book by its cover. This same concept can be applied to my latest tomato water bloody mary recipe!
Is it difficult to make a tomato water bloody mary?
When you look at the contrast of a clear and thin tomato water cocktail compared to a traditional thick and deep red bloody mary you may initially think… “wow that must be difficult to make,” or “how did they do that?” But like I was taught, you can’t always judge a book by its cover!
How do you make a tomato water bloody mary?
The truth is, a tomato water recipe is actually quite easy! Grab your veggies, a few seasonings, a cheesecloth, and a strainer and you’re good to go! You will need to prep the recipe the night before to extract the water from the tomatoes and veggies, but after sitting in the fridge overnight, you’ll just need to mix the water with some vodka the next day and your cocktail is complete.
To make the tomato puree, the night before combine beefsteak and cherry tomatoes, cucumber, celery, lemon juice, habanero pepper, horseradish, and kosher salt. Some tomato water recipes say to add sugar so that’s why I opted for cherry tomatoes instead of using sugar and added a habanero pepper to give it some spice. I also added some Worcestershire sauce but I would make that your personal preference! The Worcestershire sauce will definitely make it less “clear”.
After you puree the veggies and seasonings set up a strainer lined with a cheesecloth over a bowl wide enough to catch the water as it drains and pour the puree on top. Let it sit and drain overnight in the refrigerator and the next day, squeeze out excess water.
What kind of liquor should I use in a tomato water recipe?
For mixing the cocktail you will want a high-quality vodka with a smooth finish. The tomato water is very transparent in color and taste, so I went with one of my favorites, PAU Maui Vodka! Distilled from pineapples and natural Hawaiian spring water, the clean and refreshing finish of PAU Maui’s vodka is the perfect fit for this recipe! However, you can try a high-quality gin to switch it up and give the cocktail a different flavor!
Is the tomato water bloody mary vegetarian?
Technically, this recipe is not vegetarian because of the Worcestershire sauce. However, you can leave it out, and then the recipe will be both vegetarian and vegan!
