What makes a mix vegan?

In many bloody mary mixes and recipes, most ingredients are vegan friendly except for one main ingredient, Worcestershire sauce. Worcestershire sauce is made with anchovies and is in many bloody mary mixes and homemade recipes, making it not vegan. So not always, but if a mix does not include Worcestershire sauce, it typically is vegan!

Another thing to note is the Bloody Caesar by default cannot be vegan. Clamato is what distinguishes a Bloody Mary from a bloody Caesar and Clamato is made of a base of tomato and clam juice. How do I know if a mix is vegan?

As I mentioned, the best indicator of a bloody mary mix being vegan is the absence of Worcestershire sauce. Although indicative, it is not a guarantee. The best way to know if a mix is vegan is by reading the label. Not all vegan mixers have a vegan stamp on the label so reading the ingredients is a great way to know. If you see names of ingredients and are unsure, sending an email or a direct message on social media directly to the company. OR you can read this guide because I’ve personally verified with all the companies and their owners!

Can Worcestershire sauce be vegan?

In a nutshell, yes there are vegan versions of Worcestershire sauce out there. I personally have only ever seen it in homemade recipes where mixologists and creators make the sauce from scratch, leaving out the anchovies but not in a pre-bottled mixer. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, I personally haven’t come across it, is all!
