What is a gin bloody mary? What kind of gin should I use?
A gin bloody mary is simply just that. A bloody mary made with gin instead of the traditional vodka. Gin adds layers to the cocktail, enhancing the flavor profile of your bloody mary. For the love of god please use a dry gin like Sapphire Bombay or Beefeater in your bloody marys. Using a more juniper-forward gin like Tanqueray will not gel well with a bloody mary cocktail. Trust me. Iโve learned that lesson the hard way! I used a Singapore gin for this recipe and it was fabulous!
Why add cucumber juice to a bloody mary?
Cucumbers and tomatoes always go great together so cucumber has always complimented a bloody mary. You can always opt for a cucumber-infused liquor but I decided to make fresh cucumber juice for this recipe. The fresh cucumber juice cuts through the acidity of the bloody mary mix and brightens the cocktail, helping it go down smooth.
Plus, if youโre looking to go into 2021 eating more whole foods and a healthier lifestyle, no time like the present to make fresh juices then on day one! I donโt have a juicer so I just used my Ninja and blended the cucumbers with some lemon juice and then strained the mixture. If you donโt have time/desire to make the cucumber juice from scratch you can always pour your gin into a cocktail shaker, muddle some cucumber, and strain!

Can I substitute other liquors in a bloody mary?
Yes absolutely! You can always depend on the traditional bloody mary recipe using vodka, spice things up with a tequila or mezcal for a bloody maria, get weird with dark rum for a bloody pirate, or put some hair on your chest with whiskey or bourbon in a bloody bull. If you havenโt noticed, the sky really is the limit when mixing up bloody marys at home!
Why I chose Toma Bloody Mary Mix for this recipe
With any new year, we always want to start off on the right foot. As I mentioned this Cucumber Gin Bloody Mary Recipe is a sophisticated, not stuffy, refreshing but lively cocktail so it was imperative I chose a bloody mary mix that is not only of the highest quality, using fresh and minimal ingredients, but tastes damn good too!
Tomaโs line of bloody mary mixers are all-natural, gluten-free, vegan, and use no added preservatives. The last thing you would want after making a fresh cucumber juice and adding a smooth Singapore gin, is mixing it with a sub-par or flavorless Bloody Mary mix.
โWhat we need is balance. Well-made spirits working in harmony with mixers crafted with quality ingredients and garnishes that heighten the senses. Toma was made for you so that you can master the art of making outrageously delicious bloody mary cocktails. Start mixing and elevating your brunch!โ
Wow, I couldn't have said it better myself! Toma Bloody Mary mix is one of my favorites and I would agree it elevates any brunch! All of Tomaโs mixers are curated with owner Alexโs own Sriracha sauce and a chipotle-tomatillo sauce that gives the mix a spicy, smoky, and robust flavor. The perfect companion to gin, fresh cucumber juice, and an oyster on top!
Why use Toma Horseradish flavor?
I chose to use Tomaโs horseradish flavor for a few reasons. I just particularly enjoy it, the horseradish flavor compliments the seafood garnish very well, and I want to start the new year off bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and thatโs nothing a little pop of horseradish canโt accomplish! Horseradish, tomato, and a little bit of smoke with an oyster? Yes, please!!
Toma Bloody Mary mix also offers 2 other flavors, original which is their most spicy, and mild which has all the same great flavor punches but a little less heat. No matter your preference, you can find a Toma mixer that suits your bloody mary preferences.
Can I cook with Toma Bloody Mary mix?
Another great quality of Tomaโs Bloody Mary mixers is that you can cook with them too! When you have quality and minimal ingredients and handcrafted sauces the mix can take your brunch dishes to the next level instead of bogging them down making them heavy and overfilling.
As you can see from photos we are topping this Cucumber and Gin Bloody Mary with an oyster. Wellโฆ..no one ever buys one oyster, and oysters are the perfect brunch dish to enjoy with a bloody mary. Remember, we are celebrating the end of what was a challenging year (to say the least) so youโve earned a fancy AF bloody mary to celebrate 2021 and National Bloody Mary Day! Use my Bloody Mary Cocktail Sauce Recipe with Toma Mild for the rest of your oysters! Check that recipe out HERE!
I also made this delicious Pisto Manchego dish for brunch using Toma Original Bloody Mary mix and it came out fabulously! Instead of using wine, vinegar, or water, the Toma Bloody Mary mix added a smoky and savory dimension for a unique twist on a traditional Spanish dish. How do I make the Cucumber Gin Bloody Mary?
First you will want to start by making the cucumber juice. This is very easy, just use a juicer to juice the cucumbers and citrus hand-juicer to squeeze some lemon juice. Combine and set aside. Make sure you rinse the cucumber and lemon thoroughly before juicing.
Next, youโll wet the rim of your pint glass with a lemon and evenly coat the rim of the glass with kosher salt. Fill the glass with ice. In a shaker tin combine the Toma Bloody Mary Mix, gin, and cucumber juice. Stir and pour into your glass.
Lastly, garnish your bloody mary with a celery stalk, lemon and cucumer wheel, and a fresh oyster.

Cucumber Gin Bloody Mary
Ingredients
- 1 cucumber
- Half of a lemon
- 8oz Toma Horseradish Bloody Mary
- 1 Cucumber slice
- 1.5oz Cucumber juice
- 1.5 oz Dry gin
- 1 Celery stalk
- 1 Cucumber wheel
- 1 Lemon wheel
- 1 Oyster
- 2 tablespoons Kosher salt
Instructions
- Peel an entire cucumber and cut into halves and place it in a juicer if you have it. If you do not havea. juicer, place in a blender. Add juice from half of a lemon and blend until smooth
- If you are using a blender, strain the juice through a strainer as the mixture will be too thick for your bloody mary. If you have a juicer just combine cucumber and lemon juice
- Wet the rim of a glass with lemon. Evenly coat the rim of the glass with the kosher salt. Place the cucumber slice in your glass, see photos for inspiration. Fill your glass with ice
- In a shaker tin combine Toma Horseradish Bloody Mary mix, cucumber juice, and the gin. Shake until evenly mixed and then pour the bloody mary mixture into your glass
- Garnish your glass with a celery stalk, lemon wheel, cucumber wheel, and a fresh oyster
Notes:
Use a juicer if you have it instead of a blender for the cucumber juice. Make sure to use a dry gin as a juniper-forward gin will not taste well in a bloody mary. You can substitute gin for vodka for this particular recipe. Use Toma Horseradish flavor for this recipe, the horseradish is the perfect kick and compliment to the cucumber gin and seafood on top!
