Inspired by the outdoors
In Southern California, we may not have that same kind of “sportsman's” outdoor activities as the Midwest or northern part of the country but it doesn’t mean we don’t live an active and outdoor lifestyle here in San Diego! With 263 days of sunny to partly cloudy days a year (where “sunshine tax” comes from), warm temperatures all year, and the ocean and mountains at your fingertips, we’ve got just about every outdoor activity available all year. Well, except cold-weather activities like ice fishing. For me personally, that is totally FINE!
We may not have ice fishing or ice hockey in San Diego but we've got surfing, hiking, paddle boarding, and so much more! This recipe was developed with the sportsman in mind and keeping with the umami flavor profile. Whether your ice fishing on the lakes of Wisconsin, camping in the Green Mountains of New Hampshire, or jet skiing on the bay in San Diego, this recipe has all the goodies to prepare you for a day of sportsman OR sportswoman activities!
All this talk of outdoor activities leads me to tell you about this awesome mix I was fortunate enough to try back in Minnesota when I was judging the Bloody Mary Festival in St. Paul. One of the participants was enthusiastic, energetic, and passionate about his product, a guy named Ed. The founder of Sportsman’s Redneck Juice. A hearty, brothy, savory mix that immediately gave me the sense of umami. Which is now considered a legit type of taste, in case you didn’t know!
What is umami flavor?
Umami is the fifth taste. Umami means “essence of deliciousness” in Japanese and can be savory, meaty, salty, and have a pop of sweetness. When you add umami flavors to a dish or in this instance, a cocktail, it brings out the flavors even more and has a lingering effect that will make you keep going back for more. Being a lover of bloody marys, it’s no wonder you would enjoy the umami flavor profile.
How to make a bloody mary full of umami flavor
As I mentioned, a bloody mary its self is already aligned with the umami flavor profile. To enhance the umami flavor profile of a bloody mary add ingredients to your mix and garnish it with umami ingredients. For the umami bloody mary recipe, I topped the cocktail with grilled teriyaki beef, tomato, and mushroom skewer and I added some soy sauce and green tea for that extra boost.
How to make the umami bloody mary recipe
To make the umami bloody mary first marinate your skewers a day or so ahead of time so the meat and veggies can bask in the teriyaki flavor. Brew the green tea ahead of time and store it in a plastic container or jug. Once you’re out on your outdoor adventure fire up the charcoal grill and cook the teriyaki and vegetable skewers to your liking. Open a bottle of Sportman’s Redneck juice and mix with the green tea and soy sauce, and pour into a glass. Garnish with the teriyaki skewers.
