Quick and Easy Hair of the Dog Bloody Mary Tailgate Recipe
Quick and Easy Hair of the Dog Bloody Mary Tailgate Recipe made with Silver Spring Foods Horseradish
Football. My favorite sport to watch, not just because my team has been to the Super Bowl 8 times in the last 18 years, but because it has been a centerpiece for friends and family gatherings since I was 2 months old. When the Patriots played the Bears in the 1985/86 Super Bowl and my parents made me a Go Patriots onesie, I had no choice but to love football.
I’ve attended some pretty epic tailgates and gatherings throughout my life, in all the cities I’ve lived and traveled too. Those are some of my favorite memories! My friends and family don’t limit our tailgates and entertaining to just football though. We tailgate and gather for concerts, holiday parades, birthdays, and baseball! Pretty much any reason is reason enough!
I was super excited to partner with a company that knows all about family, friends and football, Silver Spring Foods. Silver Spring has been family owned and operated since 1929 and is the largest producer and grower of horseradish in the world! Their products are proudly served at Lambeau Field, so they also know a thing or two football and tailgates. That’s pretty badass if you ask me!
With this in mind I created this quick and easy, but incredibly delicious recipe that’ll be a hit at any tailgate or party! A flavorful and bold bloody mary mix topped with a New England favorite; sausages with onions and peppers!
I suggest making the bloody mary mix a day or two before your tailgate or party to let the flavor really soak in. However, most of the ingredients are staples at any tailgate party so, you can easily make a fresh batch on the fly!
Growing up on the east coast we really love hair of the dog bloody marys, so I decided to use Silver Spring’s Extra-Hot Prepared Horseradish with a smidge of their Beer & Brat Mustard to heighten your senses and warm you up inside, especially for those of you tailgating in frigid temperatures. Silver Spring’s horseradish will elevate any recipe with that extra zing! Tailgating for our hometown Santa Parade (yes it’s a thing) or the Patriots playoff games every year, I can remember being so cold as kids we needed a constant flow of hot chocolate as if it were an IV. As I grew into legal drinking age that has now transitioned to bloody marys and Irish coffees!
After the mix is made you’ll want to fire up the grill (gas or charcoal). My dad taught me how to grill on a gas grill, so I am still learning how to use a charcoal grill. This being the case, I sautéed the onions and peppers on the stove while the sausages were grilling. If you’re in a parking lot somewhere you’ll most likely need to grill them onsite. You can steam them in a foil pouch on the grill! Most sausages are already cooked so you’re really just heating them up and getting a nice char on the outside; quick and easy! If you like toasted buns then I suggest grilling the buns for few minutes on each side as well.
To be perfectly honest, when making a bloody mix from scratch, or when I cook anything in general, I’m not really one to measure ingredients. This is probably why I’m a terrible baker. However, the recipe below is a solid starting point for crafting the perfect savory yet sassy bloody mary mix that is quick and easy. You can add or subtract the amount of each ingredient to match your personal heat and flavor preferences. For me, the spicier the better!

Bloody Mary Mix - Serves 2-3
16oz Tomato Juice

Pinch(es) of Salt and Cracked Black Pepper
1 1/2 oz Olive Juice/Brine
2oz-3oz of Vodka
Sausage with Onions and Peppers
1 Package of Sausage/Brat (in my case I used chicken apple sausage)
1 Package of Sausage/Hot Dog Buns
1 Green Pepper
1/2 White Onion
1 Tbsp of Olive Oil
1/4 tsp of Garlic
Pinch of Salt and Pepper
Directions
Bloody Mary Mix
In a bowl or pitcher combine tomato juice and all remaining ingredients except for the vodka. Stir until the seasonings are evenly mixed
When ready to enjoy, fill glasses with ice and add vodka (1-1.5oz per glass)
Pour bloody mary mix into the glass and stir the bloody mary mix and vodka together
Garnish with your sausage, pepper, and onion sandwich
Sausage, Peppers, and Onions
Fire up your gas or charcoal grill
Heat sauté pan on the stove and add olive oil. While the pan is heating thinly slice your onions and peppers. Add the veggies, salt, pepper, and garlic to pan cook until brown - OR - Combine sliced onions and peppers, salt, pepper, and olive oil in a foil pouch and place on the grill and cook until peppers are soft
Add your sausages to the grill, browning each side. On a charcoal grill about 7 minutes on each side. If using a gas grill keep the heat on low so as not to burn the sausages too quickly
When you flip the sausages the first time put your buns on the grill to heat and char them to your desired level
Remove everything from the grill. Place the sausages in the bun, top with the onions and peppers, and put the desired amount of Silver Spring Beer & Brat mustard on top
Garnish your bloody mary
