Does anyone else love whipped cream? Seriously, one of life’s small pleasures. I remember as a child eating tubs of cool whip, without dipping something with it or topping it on something. Which I think is a pattern as I ate peanut butter with no bread, frosting with no cake, or sauce with no spaghetti!

As I mentioned, growing up I always ate Cool Whip, I never really got to experience homemade whipped cream. It wasn’t until my mid-twenties when I made it from scratch for a Thanksgiving pie, that I realized how easy it is to “whip” up!

This scratch holiday peppermint whipped cream recipe is just a few easy steps and ingredients. Leave out the peppermint and voila! You have a simple and delicious whipped cream recipe.

For this recipe you will need:

  • Heavy whipping cream

  • Powdered sugar

  • Peppermint extract

  • Red or green food color

  • Mint sprig

  • Crushed candy canes

  • Hand mixer

  • Mixing bowl

  • Spatula

  • Piping bag

Can I mix the ingredients by hand?

Yes of course you can. I mean that’s what they did before electricity but I wouldn’t recommend it if you have a choice! As someone who has carpal tunnel, I learned my lesson the hard way the first time I made scratch whipped cream that my arm and wrist aren’t up to 12 minutes straight of intense stirring.

I highly recommend using a hand mixer for this recipe or anytime you are making whipped cream from scratch.

How can I use this Peppermint Whipped Cream recipe?

The possibilities are endless! Because it’s the holiday season and peppermint-flavored you can use this recipe to top some of your favorite holiday treats like hot cocoa, mocha lattes, cakes, pies, or pancakes.

How do I make the whipped cream it look pretty?

Well, as you can see from my pictures, I wasn’t able to totally execute on that. I would highly suggest if you have one, using a piping bag with an appropriate tip. I did not have one so I improvised.

I filled a plastic sandwich bag and cut a small edge off of a corner and pipped it through that. It gave me a rather large pipe so I would suggest cutting a very small piece off to start with and adjust to your liking.

How do I crush the candy canes?

Great question! I previously tried to put the candy canes in their wrapper in a Tupperware bowl and crush them up that way. However, I found it 10x faster and easier to just put them on a cutting board and bust out the hammer!

The hammer immediately breaks the candy canes up with one decent tap. Depending on your preference and how small your littles are you can crush them down to pretty much dust or just break into a few pieces. If children are under 4 I would recommend just leaving the crushed candy canes off their plate. But don’t quote me on that, I’m not a physician.
