Do you love blue skies, unbelievable views and great food and drinks? Then look no further than the 14th-floor rooftop destination bar, The Nolen, for “The Sunday Requirement.” I require that you try this place out as soon as possible! When I walked off the elevator and turned the corner, my jaw dropped to the floor. I was blown away by the expansive views and tall ceilings, as were the other members of my monthly Bloody Mary Meetup Group
The Sunday Requirement has a unique and handcrafted menu of bloody marys including Penelope, Ring of Fire, Baja Maria, and The Sunday Morning Remedy. Since I had spent the previous day drinking bloodys and beer all day, I started off with The Sunday Morning Remedy, to remedy my hangover.
The diverse mix was thick with a bright red color that shined in the sunlight coming from all directions. It was rich, yet still had a smoothness to each sip (vital to drinking when you’re hungover). Sweet soy sauce and Siracha horsey brought contrasting flavors of sweetness and umami (brothy and savory) with a touch of sodium, that helped replenish my body’s lack of nutrients. A few sips in and I was already starting to feel better! The Siracha and wasabi from the olives gave a subtle hint of spice, but nothing that was overpowering. I personally love Asian flavors and this was my first Asian inspired bloody mary!
The presentation of the Sunday Morning Remedy is what set this bloody apart from any other I’ve had before. It was served in a martini glass that gave it a level of sophistication. Keeping with the Asian theme, the glass was rimmed with black sesame seeds instead of salt. Finally, the bloody was topped off with two olives coated in wasabi. The perfect treat at the end of a great bloody mary! Laughing and drinking with my girlfriends on the rooftop with my bloody martini, I felt like Carrie from Sex and the City!
The Sunday Morning Remedy was just the first of four bloody marys from The Nolen. Keep following my blog for parts II-IV and some of the best bloodys in San Diego!
