So, have you ever thought you knew what the world’s largest music festival was? Well I can probably bet that you would never guess it happens in the smallish Midwestern city of Milwaukee on the shores of Lake Michigan! I know, right? I never had never even heard of Summerfest before. I only stumbled across it because Zac Brown Bands new CD had just come out and I was looking to see when they were coming to the Twin Cities. Unfortunately, they were not but I saw they were playing in Milwaukee. I had never been and it only being a 4 hour drive we booked a hotel and bought the tickets!
Upon further investigation, we realized they were headlining a single night in a 2-week music festival, Summerfest. A mecca of past and present superstars, emerging artists, one-hit-wonders, unknowns, 850,0000 people, carnival rides, food trucks, cheese curds (we are in Wisconsin people), beer, and did I say MUSIC? This year is the 50th Anniversary, 12 stages and a headliner each night. The lineup was just announced and it looks epic!
We decided to stay 2 days because we saw Stevie Wonder was playing the night before Zac Brown Band and we said, "why the hell not"?! I literally can’t remember everyone we saw in the two days but it went something like; Third-eye Blind, Martinia McBride, Stevie Wonder, Walk the Moon, Chase Rice, Zac Brown Band, The Flaming Lips and Sublime. Not to mention the list of unknown artists. We weren’t even trying to see all them it’s just every way you turn around there was a stage with a kick-ass band or act on stage.
Okay, okay enough about Summerfest, end plug! Welllll of coarse being away from home we needed to feed ourselves and as much as I like cheese, I DON’T LIKE CHEESE CURDS. I’m not from the Midwest, it wasn't a way of life for me, so I wanted to eat before heading to Summerfest. In between Summerfest and our hotel was a highly-recommended place on Yelp, Oscars Pub and Grill.
I got a bomb Cuban sandwich and a bomb bloody mary. They call it their “soon to be famous” bloody mary. Their house made mix had a decent amount of heat, but not too spicy, with some red pepper flakes and chipotle thrown in there. The bloody had a taste like it just came off the grill, slow cooking for hours. It still is one of my favorite bloodys from the Midwest! The rim was salted with some kosher salt, lemons, limes, a pickle, mozzarella, olive, celery, and bacon. Lots of salty things happening here! Being a small person of life I usually have low blood pressure in the morning so I was just doing what my Dr. told me and having something with a “little” salt. This is where I realized that Minnesota isn’t the only state that provides a chaser for their bloody marys, praise the free booze gods! It wasn't just cheap beer either, it was a chaser of Shocktop. Like I said, highly recommend these bloodys, Cuban sandwich, and Summerfest! It's also right by Brewers Stadium so a great place to pregame with bloodys at $7.50 a piece! If their bloodys aren't famous yet, they "soon" will be.
